December 5, 2009

Tonight was Chili Bowl 2009 at RBC. It is a night where we cook lots and lots and lots of chili and we get together and play flag football and eat chili. It is by far my favorite chili event of the year. And I am not just saying that because I am the 2008 Chili Cook-Off Champion, I just really, really like eating chili.

This year I again cooked my award-winning “Man-Made Meatacular” chili. I asked Ashley if she wanted to team up with me and she said, “No, I want to make my own chili, I want to beat you.”

She is very competitive, it is my 7th favorite thing about her. She says it should be my 6th, she is that competitive.

My chili is meaty and spicy and delicious, and knowing this, Ashley decided hers would be meatier and spicier and more deliciousier.

Here are our crockpots, labeled for the competition:

Ashley’s chili was hotter, I’ll admit that, and I did so on the labels, but mine was meatier. I told her I divided up the meat evenly, but I lied. It’s a competition, lies must be told.

When it came time for everyone to eat the chili, there were many top contenders including my “Man-Made Meatacular” chili, Ashley’s “Two Dos Pepper Pimienta Chili Delicioso” and Brother Bill’s “Really Hot Chili”. He had to prepare a sermon for today, he didn’t have time for a creative title.

When all was said and done, and everyone’s chili had been sampled, three stood out above the rest. And while there were many good chilis by many great families including The Johnsons, The McGhees, and The Akins among others, it came down to me and Ashley and Brother Bill.

Brother Bill got third. I felt there was no need to drag that out. The real drama was between me and Ashley. Scheduled to wed in little more than a month, it was our first true battle.

And, as we learned in Dr Jim’s marriage seminar would often happen, it ended in a tie.

We tied. We were Co-Winners. Co-Champs. Co-Disappointed.

We did not want to tie, we wanted a winner. (I wanted it to be me, Ashley wanted it to be her.) So when we got back to my house we did the only fair thing we could think of:

We scraped the last bit of leftovers from each of our pots and put it down for our outdoor cat, Tom Selleck, to decide.

Mine was on the left, Ashley’s was on the right, but we didn’t tell that to Tom Selleck because we didn’t want to unfairly influence him. We agreed that whoever he picked would be the winner.

With everything in place, the tie-breaker was set to begin. We put our chili samples down, stepped back, and let Tom Selleck go at it.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand the winner is….

Amigo Mexican Restaurant beef soft taco…

In hindsight we probably shouldn’t have used the Amigo styrofoam container.

Today Ashley and I helped out in the nursery at church. We were supposed to work with the 3 year olds, but they needed help with the 2 year olds so we went in their instead.

It went well overall, although there was a moment in the middle when I had to call for back up.

Special Guest Photo by Donald Miller

Donald Miller is the bestselling author of Blue Like Jazz, Searching for God Knows What, and his latest A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. He spoke tonight at Ridgedale along with Susan Isaacs. We put them in a “Green Room” which was the handbell room, mainly because the drum closet wasn’t big enough.

I was too busy trying to not be weird superfan to notice this hanging outside the room, luckily Donald noticed it and Twit Pic’d it.

Thanks, @DonMillerIs!

“I think this might be a real magazine.”

Yup… it’s real, I Googled it. CLICK HERE

(I figured if you cared enough to click there you may as well get a cheeky handbell t-shirt out of it.)

This weekend we (Ridgedale Baptist) hosted a youth choir event called SING! with several area church youth choirs involved. The actual name of the event was “SING!” which I thought was great because even if there was a kid who wasn’t excited about it, he sounded excited about it when he talked about it.

“Hey Garrett, you want to go to the movies with us tonight?”

“Oh man, I want to, but I can’t because I have to go to SING!”

See… he still sounds excited.

Okay, tonight we are going to play the game “Which One of These Students Has Maybe Failed Eighth Grade a Couple of Times?”

-Today at church I asked Mama Bea (Chad’s grandma) if she had a mint, she said yes and gave me this.

-08nov2009- Mama Bea's Mint-1

-“What is this?” I said.

“It’s a mint,” she said.

“A mint?”

“Yes,” she said. “I washed it the washing machine and the paper got all soft so I put it in foil.”

“Hmmm…”

“It’s clean,” she said, “don’t worry, it’s clean.”

-Almost no red at all, but still delicious. Thanks Mama Bea.

November 4, 2009

-It is almost Christmas time so our church is filling up shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child again. We are asking everyone to grab a box and fill it with toys and school supplies and books and all kinds of good stuff. This year we are going to try to fill at least 600 boxes.

Here is one of those boxes:

-

I should clarify that this box is from Christmas Card Guy; he brought it to me today.

-

02- Operation Christmas Child-1

-

Which might not have needed to be clarified, but you know, I did.

Do you want to look inside?

Do you wonder, if a Dr Pepper is taped to the outside, what could possibly be inside?

Do you want to look inside??

Okay, let’s look inside…

-

02- Operation Christmas Child-2

-There was a LOT of stuff. There was a shirt, and also gloves with a matching hat.  There were some stickers and this time there are not any missing (like on the Iron Man stickers he gave me). Some were rainbows and some were turkeys, and then some were horses and Native Americans, which confused me. He gave me a Christmas card before Halloween, and for Christmas, he is giving a poor child in Africa some Thanksgiving stickers.

Also there was baby powder shampoo and a chapstick that may or may not have been found and not purchased. There was orange jello and shaving cream. There was a toy car, a bar of soap, and Colgate toothpaste. There were 6 pieces of random candy, one of which was that weird strawberry candy.

There was a card that made reference to Extreme Home Makeover with three incomplete sentences scattered about within it. There were 3 articles that talked about him and his massive record collection and a picture of an apartment complex sign. Not the one he lives in, but a random one across town.

And also…

-…and these were my favorite items…

-

02- Operation Christmas Child-2.1

-

4 disposable razors and a package of firecrackers.

-

Aaaand that’s why people in foreign countries think Americans are crazy.

October 6, 2009

-

Starting about a month ago at Ridgedale Tuesdays and Thursdays became “Mother’s Day Out”. Meaning that moms drop their kids off for a few hours at the church and they play and hang out and do crafts and sometimes they get to play with really cool guys like Chad and Kevin.

-

06oct2009- Mom's Day Out-1

-

Jay and I were playing on this really cool Fish SeeSaw Car thing and the kids were loving it. I was the Wild-and-Crazy-Fish-Rocking-See-Saw-Car-Fun-Guy. We were having a blast; a line was starting to form.

-

06oct2009- Mom's Day Out-2

-And then I got stuck in the fish and the Wild-and-Crazy-Fish-Rocking-See-Saw-Car-Fun-Guy turned into Crazy-Old-Super-Scary-Walking-Fish-Boogey-Man.

And that really freaked the kids out.

-

06oct2009- Mom's Day Out-3

-

I was worried the kids were traumatized but I heard they all slept like logs all afternoon.

Also I heard none of them will ever be back to Mother’s Day Out at Ridgedale.

Which is terrible… but also awesome… because that’s just more Fish SeeSaw Car Driving for us!

21december2008-reason-242-why-im-an-uncle-and-not-a-dad

Reason #242 Why I’m An Uncle and Not A Dad.

Tonight we had our annual Family Christmas Night at church. Basically what it is is we sing Christmas carols and hymns and different people play the piano and guitar and whatever. It is basically like when your dad used to play the piano in the den and everyone gathered around and sang Christmas carols.

If your dad was Bing Crosby.

Anyway, the night is all kinds of fun and it was made funner by the fact that Chandler played the recorder with his nose instead of his mouth.

How did this come about? Well, he was practicing (with his mouth) and I said, “Hey, can you play that with your nose?”

And he did. The whole song.

And THAT is reason #242 why I’m an uncle and not a dad.

Dress Like The Naked Cowboy Friday.

It has been warmer in Chattanooga this week, not hot, but warmer. It has been in the 60′s… outside. Inside, in the office, it has been closer to 75.

75 is not hot, but it is too hot inside an office. We have been complaining all week but there is some broken valve so we were told it was just gonna be a little bit warm. I took it as long as I could.

Photo of the Day Honorable Mention.

George Costanza.

I have been feeling cruddy over the last few days. It’s just a coldy sinusy thing that I have been taking medicine for. At night I take NyQuil tablets, and during the day I take DayQuil tablets.

That’s the plan at least. Today I forgot my medicine at home so right after lunch I ran home to grab it. I was in a hurry and I guess I wasn’t paying attention and I accidentally took NyQuil instead of DayQuil.

I couldn’t help it, it made me really, really, really sleepy and I had to take a quick cat nap.

Office Work Before The Internet

December 19, 2008

Glenda got a new-to-her computer. She doesn’t work on Fridays so I am at her desk today because Kristyl is at my desk. I did not have the password to get into Glenda’s computer so I was trying to entertain myself the old fashioned way…
