International Respect for Chickens Day

Yup, this day exists.

It is real. A real holiday no less.  May 4, 2009. You should celebrate it.

It was started by United Poultry Concerns, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the compassionate and respectful treatment of chickens, turkeys, ducks, and other domestic fowl.

I think it might have started as a joke, but the website doesn’t say for sure. Anyway, started as a joke or by someone who had way too much time on his hands and a weirdly affecianate place in his heart for chickens, it is real and this year I am celebrating!

They didn’t have a logo or graphic to display on my website so I painted my own…

And here is an excerpt from a press release on the UPC website about International Respect for Chickens Day…

(I love how it is an “International” event…)

International Respect for Chickens Day

United Poultry Concerns Proudly Announces

International Respect for Chickens Day

“They would rather die for their chicks than seek safety in flight . . .”

Aldrovandi – 16th century

Chickens are cheerful, intelligent birds. The mother hen tenderly cares for her chicks, and roosters protect their families and flocks.

Please do an ACTION for chickens on May 4. Show the world that chickens are people too! Ideas:

  • Write a letter/op-ed to the editor
  • Get on a radio talk show
  • Table at your local mall
  • Arrange a library display/video presentation
  • Have a Respect for Chickens Day celebration at your school
  • Leaflet at a busy street corner/ your local university
  • Have a We-Don’t-Eat-Our-Feathered-Friends Vegan Party!
  • Show Chicken Run!!!

I will celebrate with NO LESS than 11 herbs and spices! Now that’s respect!

  2. Shannon Says:

Your logo looks strangely like the “Big Chiekcen” in Marrieta GA

this chicken is based ENTIRELY on a chicken i had when i was a kid.

any resemblance to any other chickens, real or buildings, is only a coincidence.

(that is my favorite disclaimer i have ever written.)

  3. Shannon Says:

Chicken not Chiekcen Yikes I need to read before I post!
